Moving from Blogger to Wordpress

on November 14, 2007 by Broke Grad Student

I’ve been doing a lot of research on tips and advice to get things rolling on this blog. I came across a forum thread where some established personal finance bloggers discuss “Things I Wish I Knew When I Started.” I noticed that almost all of them mention using Wordpress. Then I noticed that I was using Blogger. Doh!

Blogger is really easy to set up, and it’s great to get something up and running as quickly as possible. However, you don’t have much control over it. As you start to expand your blog, you’ll want to start customizing it, and this is where Blogger falls short. Although Wordpress will take some extra time to get set up in the beginning, it’s a better choice in the long run, because it gives you the ability to customize almost everything.

As you can see, I’ve made the switch, and it was relatively painless. Then again, I only have a dozen posts and a few comments, so there wasn’t too much to transfer. If anyone else is considering making the switch, here’s what to expect.

Wordpress has a handy import function that will handle content from most of the popular blog sites (Blogger, TypePad, LiveJournal, etc.). To import my Blogger content, I just had to enter my Blogger account information, and it shows all the blogs you have under that account. It also displays the number of posts and comments. Simply click on the “Import” button (or as they call it, “The Magic Button”), and everything is magically imported into Wordpress. Pretty simple, huh?

The only issue I’ve discovered so far is that the imported comments don’t retain the email and website info associated with each comment. This wasn’t a big deal for me, since I only have 3 comments, but it might be an issue if you have a lot of comments and want to retain the info.
